Behold Your Son; Behold Your Mother
JESUS CHRIST made a very important statement, and there are many reasons behind it. Let’s explore some of these reasons:
Beginning and End – From the start of JESUS CHRIST’s ministry, we see that Mother Mary often wanted to show herself as the mother of JESUS CHRIST. However, JESUS took this matter seriously, ensuring she did not do so. As written in John 1:1-4, JESUS CHRIST created everything, meaning HE knew that after HIS departure, people might start worshiping His biological mother and fall into the devil’s trap. Therefore, JESUS said in John 2:4, “Woman, what have I to do with you? My time has not yet come.” This was the beginning of the teaching that no one should be exalted except JESUS CHRIST, as GOD has given HIM the highest name. Acts 4:12 states, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” JESUS reiterated this at the end, using the same words for Mother Mary in John 19:26, “O Woman.”
Overflowing of Affection – The second reason was the affection of a mother’s heart. JESUS CHRIST knew very well what a mother’s heart is like. Although HE was born by the HOLY SPIRIT, HE was carried in Mother Mary’s womb, and that affection could not be taken away from her. JESUS knew HE had to endure much pain and torture because HE came for this purpose. HE understood that amidst all His work, Mother Mary would be very troubled and might try to show her affection. As we read in Mark 3:31-35, “And his mother and his brothers came, and stood outside and sent for him. The crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, ‘Behold, your mother and your brothers are outside seeking you.’” JESUS did not pay attention to this, responding in Mark 3:33-35, “He answered them, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking at those sitting around him, he said, ‘Behold, my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of GOD, he is my brother, sister, and mother.’” Because of this mother’s affection, Mother Mary would feel very hurt. JESUS told her that HE had not come to fulfill the duty of a son but to fulfill the wish of His Father. By addressing her as ‘O woman,’ HE kept the relationship of son and mother at a distance. From this, we learn that Lord JESUS CHRIST understands our feelings very well and knows how to deal with them. HE knows that our emotions sometimes stop us from doing GOD’s work with true love. Because of these feelings and emotions, we often cannot do GOD’s work properly. JESUS taught us how to deal with this because, under no circumstances, should the work of the Lord stop. We should know how to conquer our emotions and feelings, keeping them away by rebuking or scolding them. For example, after working all week and waking up early, we get only one Sunday as a holiday. It takes a lot of effort to wake up in the morning, and many times we say we do not want to go to church because we feel very sleepy. We give in to our feelings and emotions and do not come to the Lord’s house.
Interference in Work – Lord JESUS CHRIST knew that Mother Mary’s excessive interference in His work would hinder HIS good work due to her involvement. As we read in Mark 3:31, Mother Mary and the brothers wanted to call JESUS CHRIST out or stop Him from working and take Him home. The same thing happened to JESUS CHRIST, which HE foretold as a prophecy and ensured it was fulfilled. We know that every single thing JESUS CHRIST said on the cross was connected to something very important and was part of earlier prophecies. For example, in the fifth verse, JESUS said, “I am thirsty,” and we see that they dipped a sponge in vinegar, put it on hyssop, and brought it to His mouth. This was to fulfill the prophecy spoken by David in Psalm 69:21. We can understand that if Mother Mary had been standing near JESUS on the cross, she would never have let Him drink vinegar and would have somehow given Him water. This is what mothers do.
Here, we learn an important lesson: GOD knows all our natures, both good and bad. If we have any nature that can hinder the work of YESHUA MESSIAH, HE will keep us away from hindering HIS work in some way. We may feel bad because of this, but we should remember not to ignore any nature related to YESHUA MESSIAH.
